Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs are designed to support active research participation by undergraduate students. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research projects or in projects specifically designed for the REU program.

Application Process:

  1. Complete and submit the application below.
  2. Have two people upload letters of recommendation using the reference form (the recommenders indicated in the application will automatically be sent emails to upload their letters).

Eligibility:

Applicants must be (a) rising sophomores and juniors, (b) undergraduate students in good standing, (c) enrolled as undergraduate students at their home institution in the fall of 2021, (d) US Citizens, US nationals, or permanent residents of the US, and (e) willing to relocate to Columbia, South Carolina from May 23rd to July 31st.

Confidentiality:

Your application will be reviewed by faculty members managing the REU Site to which you apply in consideration of your candidacy. Aggregate application information will be compiled for general reporting purposes to the National Science Foundation, and may be used in future publications to describe REU applicant pool demographic information. In these reports, individual responses will not be identified. Any information about your application, including your identity, is completely confidential. For purposes of generating the reports, your name will be replaced with a numeric identifier. The relationship between this numeric identifer and your application information will be kepy strictly confidential. All information will be stored in a secure database, with no names linked to the data.

Statement of Fair Treatment and Respect:

The project is overseen and administered by employees of the University of South Carolina who adhere to professional codes of ethical conduct in research, as outlined by the University of South Carolina Office of Research Compliance. We want to make sure you are treated in a fair and respectful manner.
